Staying at this campsite on our way after the North Island to South Island crossing we found it to be a bit basic with excellent toilets and showers it is fairly quiet at night even though you are near the newly reopened SH1 which might be due to it closing at night the SH1 from Picton is interesting but doable with patience.

Beautiful location by the sea Shower unit very basic and for us in Autumn very cold No waste deposit but water and electricity hook up if required and washing up When we went the road that took 15 min to town of kaikoura shut, due to be opened we believe may , I would check however if going soon as to get to town otherwise takes 5 hrs round trip. Skedaddle straight to sites near surf and sailing schools in Cornwall think Newquay , Fowey and Sennen or paddleboard around the calm coves of South Devon East Prawle is a prime pick.

The south west is also scattered with stately homes and gorgeous gardens: the Elizabethan Longleat House, the subtropical Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Sudeley Castle fortress are a handful to add to your bucket list.
To strut around natural sites with some cheese-tasting thrown in for good measure… , make a beeline for the Somerset village of Cheddar and invest in goodies of the dairy variety in the shops to haul to the gorge for lunch in the open air; the 45,year-old Wookey Hole cave in this Mendip Hills location is also worth poking around, especially if the kids are with you.
