Our history

Collecting stamps Stamp collecting was also popular in the past. Receiving letters in the post meant envelopes with stamps that could be cut out and kept in an album. Philately, the study of stamps and postal history, is still popular today, though letter-writing is rare. However, an interesting or particularly pretty stamp occasionally turns up.

Postcards are still used frequently today and have some amazing images of scenery and attractions from their respective destinations. Letter cards, definitely not that common now, were also used in written communications. Collecting postcards and cigarette cards. A letter card to Petone Mayor George London, Enter the rare Hills Hatmosphere Local milliner Hills Hats and its remarkable year history is the focus of a new Petone Settlers Museum exhibition. The exhibition is called Enter the Hatmosphere. Hills Hats owner Simon Smuts-Kennedy, known internationally for his alter-ego, The Hatman, says he wants to share his love of hats with the community in the exhibition, and show the dedication and creativity of his team.

The Smuts-Kennedy family has been manufacturing in Petone for three generations, bringing with them workers who have been part of the business for decades. The premises in Fitzherbert Street has quirky hats on display in the shopfront, and in the factory at the back, solid 19th century machinery is still used among stacks of durable leathers and exotic fabrics, evoking an era of steam-punk. It had been issued to Henry Wilds for five years of service with the Petone Fire Brigade, resulting in the inspiration to write this article.

It all began in April , three years after Petone became a borough.

Forty people gathered to set up an establishment committee for the Petone Fire Brigade. In the next two years the brigade procured uniforms and equipment, including a manual fire engine from Wellington City Council in This added to the gallon tanks situated at Bay Street and Sydney Street.

The brigade proved its worth almost immediately, preventing several disasters despite its limited resources. These events were frequently in the news, and the prowess of the local brigades and firefighters eagerly reported on. To my great delight I came across an article on one such competition in the February 26, , edition of The Evening Post that mentioned the very same Henry Wilds, whose medal I had acquired.

He was part of a winning five-man team in a competition that involved running 25 yards to an engine, putting it in working order, running out two lengths of hose, fixing branch to the water source and putting water over a rope. About the local press reported on the inadequacy of on horse-drawn equipment.

The history of settlement

The problem was resolved when a new purpose-built station was constructed in Buick Street in and a new motorised appliance acquired three years later. By , the old engine was upgraded and a second machine serviced Korokoro. In the Petone Fire Station along with several others closed after a Fire Service review that reallocated resources to professional brigades elsewhere in the Hutt Valley.

Thus ended almost years of uninterrupted fire services in Petone. The medal front and back awarded to Henry Wilds in for five years of service. If anyone has postcards that could assist thi project, please contact Nik on or nzang xtra. If you have any updates, please email petone idmedia.
