The town is a typical rural stay with rolling hills in the out skirts. Our 15 min drive to Hobbiton was beautiful. The cherry on the top being Hobbtion and the breathtaking working farm. We were fortunate to arrive early before the crowds and have 8 people in our group. For Hobbit and LOTR fans, this is a great place - the movie set tours especially the evening one with the feast are very well done with excellent tour guides and delicious food. You need a car and everything is further than you think!
The town has gone mad on Lord of the rings and Hobbits because of the nearby film set. The tourist office, built in Hobbit style is well worth a visit, it is also where you catch the bus to the Hobbiton film set,a great place to visit especially on a sunny day. Centennial Drive is a beautiful place for a slow walk. What a lovely town. Our main reason to visit was to see Hobbitton and we were not disappointed. So worth the visit. Our teenage boys loved it as much as we did. One night is probably enough then go to Hobbitton which is about 15min away. Matamata is so much more than the base from Hobbiton.
The village has great restaurants, we loved Redoubt for great food, service and atmosphere.
