We depart historic Lapwood Landing and cruise upriver accompanied by the spectacular moving landscape of the Waikato Riverland, with its Maori culture, towering ancient cliffs, early history, water activities, and abundant bird life. We are following in the wake of the old paddle steamers which plied supplies upriver to Hamilton before the establishment of road and rail. Learn more about the fascinating history of the Tuakau Bridge. Afterwards we will be able to explore the local township and main beach — Ngarunui famous for a lot of things — and its left-hand point breaks at beaches to the south of the town making it a mecca for surfers from around the world.
Leaving Raglan mid-morning we journey through rugged country stopping for lunch and perhaps a cup of the Raglan Roast Coffee before travelling onto the impressive metre high Bridal Veil Falls on the Pakoka River. We next drive to the coastal settlement of Kawhia for a short comfort stop before proceeding to our destination to overnight in Te Kuiti. Our next stop off will be Marokopa Village and the 35 metre waterfalls of the same name. Some say the most impressive and photogenic falls in New Zealand so make sure you click away and marvel at their beauty before we take in another local natural wonder - Mangapohue Natural Bridge and gorge.
The 17 metre limestone arch is the remains of an ancient cave system and the walk highlights the stalactite-like formations, farmland and 25 million-yearold fossilised oysters that are exposed in the limestone outcrops. This iconic attraction has been running since the s and the limestone caves have a fascinating history dating back 30 million years to when they began to form.
We will have our morning tea here before setting out for Otorohanga where we will be stopping in for our tour at the Kiwi House and Native Bird Park.

We are in for a culinary treat! Following lunch, we will take a tour through this incredible lodge. The afternoon will see us back in Napier to mooch and explore the charming shops before we ready ourselves for dinner. After breakfast we are making this our first port of call. A cornerstone of the region for over 20 years, the myriad of abundant and delicious produce to be gathered and savoured from its approximately 65 stallholders is not to be missed for any visitor to Hawkes Bay.
After a delicious meal at this picturesque rural getaway, we will be treated to a safari-like tour of the property to learn more of their sustainable farming practices and to further appreciate the serenity and beauty this tranquil location enjoys. Sadly, this is our final adventure before we head back to Tauranga. Arriving in the early evening we will undoubtedly look back on a journey enriched by first-class food and unforgettable scenery.

Our Northland holiday would not be complete without pausing to take in the quirkily iconic Hundertwasser Kawakawa toilets. Take a stroll round Russell after lunch and poke around the many boutiques and quaint stores in this colonial settlement. Dinner tonight is at the in-house Nikau Restaurant. Home to the remarkable built Stone Store it was a pivotal meeting place for the budding relationship between local Maori and the early European settlers.
Stopping here we will have time to take the tour, learning about the history of the store and surrounding mission station. Lunch at Kauri Cliffs luxury lodge promises to be memorable with its superb fine dining and panoramic views of the untouched coastline of Matauri Bay.

The afternoon meander will take us through Waipapa arriving at the ferry at Kohukohu on the Hokianga Harbour to transport us across to Rawene for checking in to Copthorne Hotel and Resort. The rail carts await you at the old Taumarunui Station ready for your journey down the line to the Republic of Whangamomona to be met by the shuttle back to our accommodation.
The Stratford-Okahukura railway line is rich in history, enterprise and tenacity. The carts are self-driven very easy, as there is a brake and a go pedal; of course, no steering is involved. All the tours have a guide cart in the front that is with the group the full trip. Each cart has a guidebook with points of interest marked for each station. The guide stops the group to give informative talks along the way. We are overnighting at the Spencer on Byron in Takapuna, Auckland.
Happy hour starts at 5. Its undulating landscape makes it the ideal location for a couple of great golf courses. No time to stop for a round however, just lunch along the way before travelling the final leg of the journey home to Tauranga in the late afternoon. Balance by 31st August We will take the scenic route stopping along the way at the high-altitude informal country garden, Tapuwae Garden set amongst the most stunning rural scenery. Started some 40 years ago, Tapuwae Garden boasts mature rhododendrons, camellias, magnolias, and cherries, to name a few, and is home to many of New Zealand's native birds and a number of peacocks.
Stroll through the gardens, explore the Arboretum and marvel at the Water Gardens. The grounds boast scenic views out to Mount Egmont and Mount Ruapehu on a clear day. We then continue through to Pureroa Forest, Lake Whakamaru, Mangakino and Tokoroa stopping for a late lunch along the way.
Balance by 6th of September Join us today as we head over to Waitomo Caves Hotel an early 19th century Hotel situated on a hill overlooking Waitomo Village. This lovely historical venue will be the location for our private Matinee Show from Lyrica Productions. Collectively the performers have had lead roles in musicals and we just love the passion of the stories they tell, and of course those catchy tunes.

This will be a fantastic opportunity to be a taken to another world to be entertained for a few hours whilst enjoying a heartwarming meal all in the elegance of a bygone era. Jenny Beckham. Then on to Greenmount Llamas for lunch — a beautiful and modern country home where on fine days there are superb views across to the snowy mountain peaks of National Park. Our generous hosts - Bob and Sandy Dawson will be introducing us to their picturesque King Country farm. These steadfast South American animals carry packs for trekkers exploring the hill country of the property.
Early afternoon sees us continuing through to our accommodation at Devon Hotel in New Plymouth. DAY TWO After breakfast, we depart our Hotel and start enjoying this wonderful selection of gardens in full bloom, but first we Depart Hotel and head to our local bakery to buy some lunch for later in the day. We then return to the Devon Hotel for a social get together and buffet dinner. There is a quick photo opportunity on the Len Lye Bridge as a memento of our trip, before moving onto our lunch at Mokau. And onwards we go, back to Tauranga with a mid-afternoon comfort stop on the way home.
